Know the Difference Between EPDM & SBR
Learn the difference of the 3 types of rubber used in safety surfacing: Recycled SBR, EPDM and Pre-cycled SBR.
EPDM (Ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a type of synthetic rubber. EPDM is available in a wide range of colors and is considered the premium product for rubber surfacing due to its UV resistance and color longevity.
SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) is the most common synthetic rubber in the world. Barry Meakings, a pioneer of the rubber safety surfacing industry and founder of Rubaroc, originally discovered that SBR rubber granules bonded with polyurethane binders could be applied as a durable, non-slip safety surface.
Let’s get up close and personal with rubber. Take a look at the comparison below:

Recycled SBR (top) is made from repurposed tires and tends to have a darker, less uniform appearance. Pre-cycled SBR (bottom) is manufactured specifically for surfacing applications and offers a cleaner, more consistent look.
Why EPDM? – EPDM is UV resistant and maintains its color over time, making it the go-to choice for high-visibility surfaces like playgrounds and pool decks.
Can rubber be installed on a driveway? – YES! Rubber surfacing is perfect for driveways. It’s durable, non-slip, and adds instant curb appeal to your home.
Pre-cycled SBR driveways are a game-changer for homeowners. Learn more about our Training and Support program and Products blog.
